2015

JANUARY

Those present: Phil (Grum) Grummet, Mike (Normal) Norman, Bob Adams, Ian Coats, Paul Kolarovich, Leo Davis, Peter Colling, Wilf Prest, John (JB) Bannon, Mike Johnston, John (Pottsie) Potter, Wayne Anthoney.

But twelve in all, but all delighted to be reinstated to the upstairs room at Jolley's, with a reasonably solid assurance that we will not be booted downstairs again unless there is a jolly good reason.

e

There was an enormous black mushroom on the antipasto table this month. Some said it was delicious.

The delight at being upstairs again is clearly evident

Clockwise from left: Wilf, Paul, JB, Pottsie, Bob, Peter, Mike, Grum, Normal, Ian, Wayne. Leo behind the camera.

The chicken tagine was superb

FEBRUARY

THOSE PRESENT: Bill Kay, Wayne Anthoney, Ghil'ad Zuckermann, Phil (Grum) Grummet, Paul Kolarovich, Arwed Turon, Leo Davis, Neville Schloss, Peter Colling, Mike (Normal) Norman, Ian Henschke, John (Pottsie) Potter, Don Riddell, Wilf Prest, John (JB) Bannon. Sixteen Gents in all.

Arwed caused a minor sensation on his arrival by presenting a large scrapbook, found by a friend in the Adelaide University Dramatic Society's room in the Union Hall shortly before its destruction. It contained programs from most of the shows presented in Union Hall from 1964 to 1976. Many of the Gentlemen present (Bill, Wayne, Grum,Paul, Arwed, Pottsie, JB)  were involved in many of the shows listed and naturally the interest was great. Once has been around the traps for a while, and needing to be treated with great care, it will be given to the Special Collection of the Barr Smith Library.

It was good to see Ghil'ad back at lunch after a three month absence. He reported that he had survived an earthquake in China and being robbed somewhere else.

Wayne demonstrates an astounding trick that he found on the Internet -  the World's Fasted Shoelace Tie method -  to considerable interest, proving that (a) you can teach an old dog new tricks and (b) the Internet is useful for something after all

MARCH

Those present: Ghil'ad Zuckermann, Phil (Grum) Grummet, Wayne Anthoney, Marl Coleman, Bill Kay, Sa (Bumpy) Harris, Mike (Normal) Norman, Peter Colling, Geoff Shepherd, Leo Davis, John (McGoon) McGowan, John (Pottsie) Potter, Andy (Lidgo) Ligertwood, Mike (Cobbs) Jacobs, Keith Conlon, Andy (Bish) Bishop, Tony (Brooks) Brooks, Bob Lott, Ian Henshke. 19 in all, possibly a non-Christmas Hogarth record.

And it was a delight to see Bumpy back in the fold.

The wonderful book of Union Hall memorabilia that Arwed brought last month was brought again for the benefit of several Gents

who had not seen it and proved again to be of great interest.

Antipasto - magnificent as always

Pottsie shows us how to use a pepper grinder. Like as if we didn't know.

Normal had brought in something from the internet about inane phone conversations to 'help lines'

and Potter was delighted to join in a duet reading that was well received.

MAY

Monthly Hogarth Club Luncheon; Upstairs at Jolley’s Boathouse, River Torrens Bank.

Diners: John Bannon, Ian Bidmeade, Andrew Bishop, Tony Brooks, Keith Conlon, Leo Davis, Phil Grummet, Ian Henschke, Michael Jacobs, Bill Kay, Paul Kolarovich, John McGowan, Mike Norman, Tony Parkinson, Ed Pegge, John Potter
, Peter Tregilgas, Arwed Turon, Neville Sloss, Michael Wex, Milton Wordley, Prof Ghil’ad Zuckermann.

Apologies: Wayne Anthoney, Bob Adams, Ian Coates, Mark Coleman, Malcolm Elliott, Ian Hamilton, Samela Harris, Robert “Red” Hodge, Michael Johnston, Andy Ligertwood, Bob Lott, Don Riddell, Prof Wilfrid Prest.

With 22 at table this was our largest gathering ever, apart from the 25 who have attended each of our two Holden Street Xmas romps. Ghil'ad Zuckermann's guest, Michael Wex, visiting Adelaide to give lectures on Language, gave a very entertaining talk about teenage boys, in a Canadian Jewish School, grappling with finding appropriate language, often purloined from the religious language they were dealing with day to day, for practices they dreamed of, some of which they were not even sure existed. Our fun may have gone on longer (there were cries of 'More, more') had Leo not set a five minute time limit.

Brooks informed us of the death of Doug Craig and some said some kind and carefully chosen words about him.

Conlon read us a bonza piece about a death on a long-drop toilet. Normal had brought it along. Someone suggested that the anonymous gem had the feel of our Auburn scribe, C. J. Dennis, about it and that it might  have been his work.

JUNE

Monthly Hogarth Club Luncheon; June18, 2015.
Downstairs at Jolley’s Boathouse, River Torrens Bank.

Diners: Wayne Anthoney, Tony Brooks, Mark Coleman, Leo Davis, Phil Grummet, John McGowan, Mike Norman, Geoff Shepherd,

Apologies: Bob Adams, Ian Bidmeade, Andrew Bishop, Ian Coates, Malcolm Elliott, Ian Hamilton, Samela Harris, Robert “Red” Hodge, Michael Johnston, Bill Kay, Paul Kolarovich, Andy Ligetwood, Bob Lott, Don Riddell, Tony Parkinson,  Ed Pegge, Prof Wilfred Prest , Neville Sloss, Arwed Turon, Milton Wordley.

Perhaps ‘winter blues’ (Solstice at 2: 07:25, Monday) had worn the lads down but our numbers were close to an all time low.  This probably led to the limited antipasto spread provided.  We were given a treat of pudding (cakes) and a cheese plate, presumably as some compensation.  The smallness of the group also had us placed downstairs.

We showed signs of slowing down today.  One lad wistfully said ‘I’m becoming more conservative’ which gave another the opening to say that he’d starting reading Andrew Bolt recently and could not find anything he disagrees with, especially about climate change.  Another complained of ‘greenies’ opposing nuclear power.  Yet another lunged into a ‘why don’t we value add to our wool instead of selling it to the Italians so they can?’

Wayne’s memory is faltering almost as fast as mine. He got starry eyed about Gough Whitlam making his University days so wonderful and free of fees when he was reminded that Whitlam came to power years after Wayne had graduated.

Brooks told a charming tale about being somewhere in Magill (late 1960s?), near his childhood home, when some old ladies stopped him and said ‘We know you’.  Tony modestly admitted ‘I sometimes appear on the TV’.  ‘No, we KNOW you.  Don’t tell me.  I’ll remember; aha, you’re Molly Brooks’ boy’.

JULY

Thursday, July 16, 2015.

Monthly Hogarth Club Luncheon; Downstairs at Jolley’s Boathouse, River Torrens Bank.

Diners: Wayne Anthoney, Mark Coleman, Leo Davis, Phil Grummet, Bill Kay, Mike Norman, Arwed Turon,

Apologies: John Bannon, Bob Adams, Ian Bidmeade, Andrew Bishop, Tony Brooks, Ian Coates, Keith Conlon, Malcolm Elliott, Ian Hamilton, Samela Harris, Robert “Red” Hodge, Michael Johnston, Paul Kolarovich, Andy Ligetwood, Bob Lott, John McGowan, Tony Parkinson,  Ed Pegge, John Potter, Prof Wilfred Prest, Don Riddell, Geoff Shepherd, Neville Sloss, Milton Wordley.

Our numbers were so low that antipasti were served at table.  We, small in number at seven, were delivered three lamb shoulders.  Only two were actually eaten from and both still had enough meat on them to be taken home by chaps.  Leo was encouraged to take the full one and ate lamb shoulder, in various forms (sandwiches, with salad, stewed with silver beet and tomatoes, etc.) over six nights.

AUGUST

Monthly Hogarth Club Luncheon

Downstairs at Jolley’s Boathouse, River Torrens Bank

Diners: Bob Adams, Wayne Anthoney, Mark Coleman, Keith Conlon, Leo Davis, Phil Grummet, Ian Henschke, Robert “Red” Hodge, Michael Jacobs, Bill Kay, John Potter, Prof Wilfred Prest, Geoff Shepherd, Ghil’ad Zuckermann

Apologies: John Bannon, Andrew Bishop, Tony Brooks, Ian Coates, Malcolm Elliott, Ian Hamilton, Samela Harris, Michael Johnston, Paul Kolarovich, Andy Ligetwood, Bob Lott, John McGowan, Mike Norman, Tony Parkinson, Ed Pegge, Don Riddell, Neville Sloss, Arwed Turon, Milton Wordley.

We were downstairs, yet again, despite our numbers having surged back into the mid teens.  Understandable commercial pressures gave some other group precedence.  Leo gets grumpy when we are downstairs because the lighting for family snapping is insufficient.
Antipasti were back to the previously set high standards and were not served at table this month.

Clockwise from left:  Ghil’ad Zuckermann, Phil Grummet, Michael Jacobs, Geoff Shepherd, John Potter, a bit of Mike Norman, Keith Conlon

Ghil’ad told us of Toowoomba being Aboriginal attempt to say the English word ‘swamp’ without the ability to make the sound ‘Sw’, hence ‘Twamp’ to ‘Twampa’ to ‘Toowoomba’.

Ghil’ad asked the table not to answer his question till prompted.  We all sat expectantly.  ‘An axe is sharp.  The opposite is?’  The class was eager.  He immediately pointed to Bob Adams who answered ‘Blunt’.  Ghil’ad was disappointed and said ‘You’re obviously fully assimilated.  All
other Americans I ask say ‘dull’ without exception, till now’.  This led to extended conversation about local language nuances.

Bob Adams, waitress, Keith Conlon (being served slow cooked brisket), Wilf Prest, Phil Grummett, John Potter.

Wayne Anthoney (about to startle us by firing a pistol, an act reprised at Bob Lott’s 75th a few days later), Bob Adams, Keith Conlon, Wilf Prest.

There was discussion about swearing, the topic of a speech Ghil’ad was to deliver that evening (all invited).  He was interviewed about it today, on Radio 891, by Ian Henschke,.  That let Wayne, who’d clearly heard the interview, to ask Ghil’ad to repeat a joke he’d told.  Osama Bin Laben arrives in heaven only to be kicked by Thomas Jefferson.  Soon after he is punched in the stomach by George Washington.  Robert E. Lee is next to assault him. Osama has had enough and goes to God to complain at the broken promise.  ‘But you’ve got just what I promised; 30 Virginians’.  It’s typical that Ghil’ad’s jokes are all about language, but I suppose most jokes are.

Bob Adams presented one of his own art works, a fine sculptural collage, to Leo, as a thank you for some family snaps received over time.

SEPTEMBER

Monthly Hogarth Club Luncheon; Downstairs at Jolley’s Boathouse, River Torrens Bank.

Diners:, Wayne Anthoney, Andrew Bishop, Keith Conlon, Leo Davis, Malcolm Elliott, Phil Grummet, Ian Henschke, Michael Jacobs, Bill Kay, Paul Kolarovich, John McGowan, Mike Norman, Ed Pegge, John Potter, , Geoff Shepherd, Neville Sloss, Milton Wordley, Ghil’ad Zuckermann.

Apologies: Bob Adams, John Bannon (in Melbourne), Tony Brooks, Ian Coates, Mark Coleman, Ian Hamilton, Robert “Red” Hodge, Michael Johnston, Andy Ligertwood (in China till early Oct), Bob Lott, Tony Parkinson (in NZ), Prof Wilfred Prest, Peter Tegilgas, Arwed Turon (Overseas).

We were put downstairs again because a party from Adelaide University had been given priority upstairs. There were few grumbles, perhaps because almost all of our membership are graduates of or staff at that institution. I suspect there’d have been more complaints if it had been a Flinders or, dare I say, Uni SA party.

Pegge told of being in a Middle Eastern country recently. ‘Which?’ It turned out he’d hardly been in a country, rather in transit in an airport such as Dubai where he’d been amazed that signs were written in a scribble that surely nobody could read. Ghil’ad surprised most of us, and Pegge in particular, by taking out a piece of paper and proceeding to write quickly and easily in that same impossible scrawl. Pegge saw an opportunity and wanting to add to the list of languages in which he could perform that well known line from ‘Summer of the 17th Doll’, ‘To be, or not to be’, asked Ghil’ad to instruct him.

Neville Sloss has some commercial involvement with publication of ‘SA Gardens’ so he brought free copies for anyone to take.

Keith Conlon, Chloe Roeger, Paul Kolarovich,, Andrew Bishop.

Ed Pegge, Bill Kay, waitress, Phil Grummett, Malcolm Elliott, Milton Wordley.

Ghil’ad Zuckermann, Wayne Anthoney, John McGowan.

Wayne
told a simple non saucy, perhaps misogynist, joke about someone (was it the wife or the husband?) asking ‘What would you do if I won the lottery?” The punch line involved the win being only a few dollars and the house changing hands and the couple separating, on the basis of the answer. It went down, and was told, well.

The party breaks up. Wayne Anthoney, John McGowan, Ed Pegge, Andrew Bishop.

NOVEMBER

This will be remembered as the last lunch attended by John Bannon, who passed away on Sunday December 11th, 2015. More will be written here but in the meantime Leo has sent through a set of photos from this gathering, many of which show John, somewhat frail but in fine form as always.

She spoke critically of the treatment of John’s legacy in such balanced and objective  organs as
The Advertiser.

Bannon’s fine falsetto was much missed in certain carols.

Michael Jacobs had tendered his apology because he was celebrating, his partner Liz Ho’s 64th birthday (caviar and champagne at the recently

opened Mayfair Hotel in King William St).  But with John Bannon’s unexpected death Michael arranged to come along, with Liz, at the end of the gathering,

bringing several bottles of Coopers Pale Ale, John’s favoured drink, for us to share.
