FEBRUARY
Thursday, February 19, 2004.
Hogarth Club Monthly Luncheon. Upstairs at
Chesser Cellar, Chesser Street, Adelaide.
Diners:
Peter Tregilgas, John Potter, Tony Colebatch, Tony Brooks, Paul
Lloyd, Leo Davis.
Seated, non dining visitor:
Primo Caon. Apology:
Michael Jacobs (bad
back), Tony Short; (in NZ).
I arrived late, just in time for pudding, because the arrangement
that allows me to get away from school, a lesson swap with Deputy
Principal Colin Marshall, fell through today because he was absent
from school.

Paul Lloyd, Tony Colebatch, Peter Tregilgas.
(Note that two, maybe all three, are smoking cigarettes).

Clockwise from front left:
John Potter,
Primo Caon
(proprietor),
Tony Brooks, Lisa Rouse delivering pudding, Tony Colebatch,
Peter Tregilgas.
Note the
period piece mobile phone, proudly stood on end, and Colebatch’s
beers (he never drank wine).

Peter Tregilgas
& John Potter with Lisa Rouse serving pudding.
Primo Caon came up and sat with us, to try, unsuccessfully, to
convince us to form a Hogarth Club Table, in Chesser Street, which
is to be closed on Sunday, February 29. I think he does this
in leap year only. The lack of enthusiasm was partly related
to lack of funds. Or Church commitments?
Note rolling tobacco and lighter.

Paul Lloyd,
Tony Colebatch, Lisa Rouse (our pre-Raphaelite
beauty), Peter Tregilgas.

Tony Brooks,
Paul Lloyd.
Michael Jacobs was unable to attend because of a bad back.
He did not reappear until April 15 and even then he found the stairs
a very difficult proposition.
MARCH
Thursday, March 18, 2004.
Hogarth Club Monthly Luncheon. Upstairs at
Chesser Cellar, Chesser Street, Adelaide.
Diners:
Wayne Anthoney, John Bannon, Tony Colebatch, Leo Davis, Malcolm
Elliott, John Potter, Peter Tregilgas
(late; non dining).
Apology:
Michael Jacobs (bad back, still),
Tony Short; (in NZ).
We were pleased to find that Wayne Anthoney had got down to
Adelaide, from his job outside Alice Springs. He tells quite simple
jokes that are enlivened by his telling and that have us all
laughing, throughout the joke, in anticipation of the punch line,
which, in this shot, has just been delivered.

Images from the last couple of
gatherings, especially Xmas, were viewed with special interest.
Potter is looking at a shot of Bannon delivering a speech by Hitler,
at Xmas Hogarth last year.
Tony Colebatch (the only smoker at today’s table, till Tregilgas
arrived very late) is smoking at table, which was common till past
it becoming illegal in 2007.

Above is one of those shots that John told us Angela says ‘always
shows you either pontificating or drinking.’

Graham Ingerson was at table today and had left just minutes before
Bannon said ‘I can barely be in the same room with the man. Don’t
get me wrong. We can talk to one another but…’
Bannon told a great yarn about Stan Evans, Graham Ingerson and his,
Bannon’s, dying father. It went something like this….
Stan Evans was allegedly involved in a scandal involving a woman in
one of his quarries, in the Adelaide Hills. Details included gravel
marks on his knees and elbows, etc. Bannon, perhaps a back bencher
at the time, was given the task of attacking Evans in Parliament.
He went to Evans and asked ‘Is it true, Stan?’ ‘Well, John, you
know; a man’s a man.’ ‘Then it’s true.’ ‘Yes.’ Bannon then asked
Evans (Does this ring true? Maybe he asked himself.) ‘Has this
affected your performance as a member?’ ‘Of course not.’ So Bannon
decided not to pursue the matter in the House. Bannon says it was
13 years before Evans paid him back. John’s father, Charles Bannon,
was dying of cancer, in Mary Potter Hospice and John wanted to visit
him. He approached the Liberal whip, Graham Ingerson, to ask for a
‘pair’. Instead of immediately granting the ‘pair’ Ingerson took
the request to the party room and it was rejected and he passed the
news on to Bannon. Evans, who’d been in the party meeting,
approached Bannon and told him ‘Visit your Dad. If a vote comes up
I won’t be in the House.’

Note that Robert Hodge is smoking at table. Tregilgas is too (see

Today, Thursday,
April 12, 2012, I sent an email to Peter Tregilgas asking him for
the name of his guest, till now recorded as ‘Tregilgas’ guest’.
His answer:
‘That's
easy –
Christopher Harnett - Director Australian Medical Supplies
etc.
Hell of a nice fellow, I went to school with him, Urrbrae
Agricultural High (before they let bumpy lads in). I
was the best man for his first marriage and he was best man for
my first (second really) but the first legal. I
was godfather for his first daughter Monique and he was
godfather for my first daughter Emily. He lives in
Sydney, I live in Port Macquarie. I saw him at his daughters
wedding at Port Elliot last Oct - You could say
we know each other pretty well.
Best regards ... Peter Tregilgas (0400-191054)”

I
first came across Tony Colebatch at the Hill Billy Hoot, a
live show broadcast on Monday evenings from THREE D community
radio. It was then compered by ‘Terry Tex’ Bradford, a
sometime Hogarth tabler, who modelled himself on Garrison Keillor.
Tony’s Hoot name was Theosawrus because he played the
musical saw. For some reason he had it with him today and played
it.
