HOGARTH LUNCHEON; Chesser Cellar, Chesser Street, Adelaide.
Diners:
Andrew Bishop, Wayne Anthoney and his son Tom Anthoney,
Peter Tregilgas, Edmund Pegge, John Potter, John McGowan, Mike
Norman, Leo Davis, Rod Wallbridge, Robert Maine,
Malcolm Elliott.
Apologies:
Michael Jacobs (He is ill).
While this was my third Hogarth Luncheon it was the first time I
dared test the forbearance of the group by bringing my camera. I
arrived first and having time to kill I spent it closely examining
the Hogarth “prints”. I heard later that a previous proprietor had
stolen the originals when he sold the business. Though, over
the years I’ve heard alternative stories and different person(s)
held responsible.

John McGowan spoke of some of his current activities. He
has been working full time, supported by his wife,
Ursula, while he writes a film script about an unrelated
John McGowan, born in Terowie, who went to the Second
Boer War, then the east coast of the USA, where he
worked as a stuntman in movies, and then he went to the
west coast, Hollywood, where he worked as a director,
writer, actor, star. For 12 or more years he was the
Executive Secretary of the Screen Directors Guild.
John’s Biography was published in 2005.
John recently had a ruptured appendix removed. |

Three
(of 4) Carol Singers and their teacher(?), Peter Tregilgas
(he arrived late so does not appear in other shots),
Robert Maine.
The harmony quartet included Primo Caon’s grand daughter (I’m
guessing, the girl on the left).

We
began the by now traditional (my first time) Hogarth Xmas Carol
singing (note the printed words and music that I was meeting for the
first time) and the harmony quartet were impressed at the high
standards on display; there are some very good singers in the
Hogarth group. The quartet joined in and John McGowan recorded them
on his video camera. Robert Maine objected, for some reason, serious
or jesting, and circulated a voting paper to have the recording
banned. He lost the vote.

Anthoney, Ed Pegge, John Potter, Paul Lloyd

Not everybody
is interested in listening to the Carol singers.
Clockwise from front left:
Andrew Bishop, Tom & Wayne Anthoney, Ed
Pegge, John Potter,
Robert Maine, Malcolm Elliott,
Mike Norman, Paul Lloyd, Rod Wallbridge.

John Potter treated us to some tricks and then was easily
topped by Wayne doing his.
Andrew Bishop,
Tom Anthoney, Wayne Anthoney, John Potter,
John McGowan.
Wallbridge, an accountant whose younger brother is an engineer,
told me that he played 11 minutes of SANFL football, for Sturt,
against Norwood, under another name. Recently he has had an eye
operation and a new left knee installed and something else I think.
He had an horrendous bike accident decades ago.
Paul Lloyd was quiet and did not join in the carol singing. Later
Andrew Bishop mentioned that recently Paul has had a second throat
operation, for something like a sleep apnoea condition.
Robert Maine once worked from 11 am till past 11 pm editing various
newspapers. There is a strong thread of (print, radio, TV)
journalism through Hogarth. (Don Riddell, Paul Lloyd, Michael
Jacobs, Robert Maine, Tony Brooks, John McGowan, Andrew Male, Philip
White, Philip Satchell, Keith Conlon, Ian Henschcke, Samela Harris,
Helen Womack (UK), Michael Prest (UK), Bob Ellis, Mike Norman, John
McDonnell, even Fr. Ephraim Chifley. And Milton Wordley in Press
photography.)
